Richard had an interest in astronomy at a very young age but couldn't do anything about it until he was 8 years old, since he had poor vision. Then he got a haircut. Richard  graduated from the Department of Astronomy at the University of South Florida/University of Florida with  a B.S. and M.S. in Astronomy, specializing in positional astronomy.  His graduate work was with the world renowned astronomer, astrometrist and the father of modern astrometry Heinrich K. Eichhorn.

Richard's career at NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas included analyzing satellite data, and in the Shuttle program: flight design, rendevous maneuvers and instrument pointing to celestial targets along with military applications.

Richard left the space program to start his own real estate investment business and has successfully bought and sold several hundred single family homes and apartments. He has traveled worldwide on over 100 scientific expeditions collecting scientific data on solar eclipses plus stellar eclipses by minor planets (asteroid occultations). He has been involved in occultations since 1990 and is the long time Executive Secretary of the International Occultation Timing Association (IOTA). Trained by the very best of the Special Forces for many years, Richard is also athletic, competing in adventure races and other endurance events. Asteroid 29898 carries his name.
